The study came more specific, that “coffee significantly affects the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of many drugs.”
Many complications can occur from taking the drug with coffee, says Purvi Parekh, M.D., internal medicine in Pennsylvania. “The main issue is that coffee can amplify the effects or influence the absorption of some common medications, which in turn can interfere with your goal of getting the full effect of the drug,” she says.
The study found that certain drugs are more affected by coffee consumption:
1. Thyroid medication
Parekh says thyroid medications, in particular, should be taken on an empty stomach, and not followed by anything else for at least half an hour. This is so that the body can absorb the thyroid drug.
2. Osteoporosis drugs
If you take coffee with an osteoporosis medication, you “reduce the full effectiveness of the medication.”
3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease
Acid reflux medications work best when taken first thing in the morning, before you eat or drink anything else. It should be taken into account that coffee contains acid, as this will exacerbate the problem for which you are taking the medicine.
4. Leg swelling
Caffeine generally stops the hormone that stimulates water retention, so it is a diuretic. This means that the caffeine in coffee can increase the effectiveness of diuretic medications, such as those used to treat swollen legs.
5. Heart failure
Also, due to caffeine’s diuretic properties, patients taking heart failure medications should be careful to drink caffeinated coffee.
6. High blood pressure
When taken with coffee, medications used to treat high blood pressure may also cause a more severe diuretic effect.
7. Attention Deficit Medications
If you’re taking medication for a diagnosis of hyperactivity or impulsivity, the caffeine in coffee can “raise everything,” making it less likely that your body will benefit from the drug.
8. Cold Medicines
Some cold medicines, stimulants. If you’re hoping to nap later in the day, keep in mind that drinking coffee while you’re taking some cold medications can make it hard to rest.
All this does not mean that you should abandon this beloved drink. You may just want to put an interval between taking the medicine and the coffee so that there is no interaction.
