He pointed out that the main sign of vitiligo is the loss of skin color, and it usually appears on areas exposed to sunlight such as hands, feet, arms, face and lips, and it may also include incomplete loss of skin color and the appearance of white spots, and the appearance of a white color on the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows or Beard, loss of color in the tissues (mucous membranes) inside the mouth and nose, as well as a change in the color of the inner layer of the eyeball (retina), and the pink coloring of blood vessels under the skin.
A dermatologist mentioned that there are several types of vitiligo, including non-segmental vitiligo, which is closely associated with autoimmune conditions. Where the immune system attacks the cells of the body, causing white spots all over the body, and the second type, segmental vitiligo, which is limited to one side or one area of the body and usually begins at an early age, and there is extensive (diffuse) vitiligo that includes most of the body’s organs.
He indicated that the treatment differs from one type to another, some of which are treated with topical medicines on the skin for small areas, and types for which pills are taken orally, while there is Vitiligo that requires light therapy to restore the loss of color on the skin and is less effective on the hands and feet, but it works better on the face. , While light therapy is used to restore skin color, in addition to that there are types of Vitiligo that require surgery and are only for adults with Vitiligo, provided that it has not changed (stable) for at least 6 months.
And the dermatologist recommended, for those with skin protection from the sun, to wear protective clothing and use sunscreen, as the vitiligo spots are easily susceptible to sunburn, and the incidence of sunburn can worsen the vitiligo spots, and the use of lotions for darkening the skin must be avoided. Reducing stress and tension, working on psychological stability, avoiding exposure to some chemicals, not using medically unlicensed creams and mixtures, and avoiding testing treatment based on the experiences of others, and a specialist must be consulted.
The General Administration of Clinical Education in the Ministry of Health corrected many misconceptions about what some are circulating about the presence of vitamins, amino acids and enzymes to restore skin color, explaining that most of them have not been studied, and there is no evidence of their validity, and the possible side effects of them have not been clarified.
