Ombrea raises 10 million euros for its agrivoltaic parasols

The sun is at its peak for the supplier of agricultural climate protection tools Ombrea. After winning in January, with Total Quadran, the equipment of several large crops with its energy-producing shade systems during the last call for tenders of the Energy Regulatory Commission, the young Provencal company announces, this Wednesday, to have mobilized funding of 10 million euros to accelerate its growth.

Two thirds are provided by a pool of investors led by a benchmark player in sustainable finance, Mirova, supported in particular by CMA CGM Venture. The balance of 3 million will be supplemented by debt contracted with the company’s historical banking partners. “The family remains the main shareholder”, specifies its co-founder and managing director, Julie Davico-Pahin.

Double in size every year

Strengthened by its first successes, the company plans to equip 150 hectares of agricultural land in 2022, then to almost double the number of its installations each year until it reaches a thousand hectares sheltered from the harsh climatic conditions by 2027, mainly in the south of France. To achieve this, Ombrea plans to increase the average surface area covered from less than one hectare today to six.

All agricultural sectors are targeted: viticulture, arboriculture, horticulture, market gardening, perfume plants, etc. Commercial deployment has already started with the opening of an office in Toulouse, in the heart of one of the regions most exposed to climatic impacts. “We plan to hire 50 people by 2023,” she projects.

Ombrea is working on new technological developments. Controlled intelligently, its parasols producing photovoltaic energy already regulate the climatic parameters of the plant through a dynamic shading game. Soon, they will also be able to control the right amount of inputs and water, and anticipate the deployment of protective nets against episodes of hail or frost. “Our raison d’être is to improve the quality of the farmer’s work, both comfort and productivity while respecting the environment”, explains Christian Davico, farmer by trade and co-founder of Ombrea with her daughter.
